NEW: Raimondo Blasts Taveras for Property Tax Hikes in Providence

Gina Raimondo called out Angel Taveras on Monday because residential property taxes have increased almost 27-percent since he took office as Mayor of Providence in 2011.

Under Mayor Taveras, property taxes have been raised on two separate occasions: five percent in FY 2012 and 20.7-percent in FY 2014. In total, property taxes have increased 26.7-percent since 2011.

"Providence property taxes are skyrocketing and placing a huge strain on the budgets of too many families," said campaign manager Eric Hyers. "Many homeowners are struggling just to make ends meet right now and an almost 27 percent tax increase in three years is making it much harder. With Providence’s finances being compared to Detroit, which is bankrupt, this is not the kind of leadership that the state can afford right now.”

The average Providence homeowner has had their property taxes raised by an estimated $872. The second property tax bill of the year was due last week.
